A High-Performance BMW X8 M Crossover Coupe Is Probably Coming
A recent trademark points to BMW adding another sporty crossover to its M model line.
We've been hearing talk of a potential BMW X8 for years now, and this latest bit of news adds further fuel to the fire. BMW recently filed to trademark the X8 M name in Germany, leaving us to wonder if a new flagship crossover SUV from the brand is right around the corner.
Of course, just because BMW files for a trademark doesn't mean it'll actually use the name. Theoretically, the move could just be BMW's way of keeping its options open. However, BimmerPost, which originally reported the filing, says the X8 is likely to start production in July 2022. This information aligns with previous reports that the vehicle is on the fast-track to production.
BMW talked about the possibility of an X8 back in 2017. Speaking with Autocar, BMW development boss Klaus Frohlich admitted there's room for an X8 in the lineup—especially in markets such as China. If and when BMW decides to build the big crossover SUV, expect it to feature coupe-like styling similar to the X4 and X6.
The X8 M should be extremely potent, too. Last year, our friends at Automobile reported the model is expected to make up to 750 horsepower from an eight-cylinder gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain.
We would love to see BMW add an ultra-luxurious X8 to the line, too. Such a model could serve as a sleeker-looking competitor to the Mercedes-Maybach GLS, the extremely luxurious flagship SUV from the three-pointed star. Then again, beggars can't be choosers. We're just hopeful the X8 M actually comes to fruition and we'll worry about any additional variants later.
