Turns Out, 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Charges Quicker Than Expected
At any of 40,000 plugs at 13,500 DC fast-charge stations, it can get a bulk charge in under an hour.
Original calculated estimates suggested that, when plugged into a DC fast-charger the 2021 Mustang Mach-E would be able to add 47 miles of range in 10 minutes. That's a healthy range bump in the time it takes to hit the head and grab a snack. Now the official physical testing is complete, and the results are actually 30 percent better: 61 miles in 10 minutes. Giddyup, electric Mustang-branded SUV!
That's the result for the top-dog extended-range rear-drive model. The extended-range all-wheel-drive variant can take on "only" 52 miles of range in 10 minutes. For the standard-range battery, the numbers are 46 and 42 miles for rear- and all-wheel drive. The estimated time required to DC fast-charge a Mustang Mach-E from 10 percent to 80 percent charge is 45 minutes for the extended-range battery and 38 minutes for the standard-range one. That's with either drive option, based on EPA-estimated range calculation methodology, with the 10-minute figures counted from when the vehicle begins to receive charge and assume a battery that starts out substantially discharged (as the charging rate decreases as battery reaches full capacity). Note that external factors like temperature, driving style, and battery state-of-health, among others, can cause actual charging times to vary.
Prefer to charge at home? The available 48-amp Ford Connected Charge Station needs 10.1 hours to fully charge a 300-mile extended-range Mach-E battery. Or, you can use the Ford mobile charger that comes standard with the vehicle and plugs into a 240-volt outlet. With this charger, achieving a full 0-100-percent charge on a big battery takes 14.1 hours; it comes with a 20-foot cord with a NEMA 14-50 plug that fits an electric oven/range electrical outlet, and can draw 32 amps from a 40-amp breaker circuit. You probably don't have time to top up with a typical. household 120-volt plug—that takes 100 hours.
Not only will it be quicker to charge than originally thought, it will also be easier to find and pay for said quick-charger, on the FordPass Charging Network, which has recently expanded by 1,000 charging stations and 5,000 charge plugs. That brings the total of charging locations accessible to the FordPass smart-phone app to 13,500 locations with 40,000 plugs. Ford claims that makes its publicly announced EV-charging network bigger than that of any other original equipment manufacturer or automaker offering all-electric vehicles that has announced a charging network (based on Department of Energy data). There's even an interactive map to help chart courses that incorporate charging stations along a planned route.
