Skoda Scala is the newest compact model from the Czech carmaker
At the 2018 Paris Motor Show earlier this month, Czech carmaker Skoda unveiled the Vision RS Concept. According to Skoda, the new Vision RS doesn’t just show how its RS models could appear in future, but also foreshadows a new model in the compact car segment. Now, Skoda has finally confirmed the name of that new compact model – the all-new Skoda Scala.
Skoda reveals that the newest nameplate in its lineup derives its name from Latin word ‘scala’, which when translated would mean ‘stairs’ or ‘ladder.’ Thus, Scala signifies the next step forward for Skoda in the compact segment. Furthermore, the Skoda is taking a leap forward in terms of technology, providing the new Scala with innovative features that so far only offered in vehicles belonging to higher segments. Moreover, the Czech brand has also taken a number of several major development steps forward.
Interestingly, the Scala is the first Skoda series production model in Europe to feature the “Skoda” lettering -- instead of the Skoda logo -- in the center of tailgate.
Bernhard Maier, chief executive at Skoda, remarked that the new Scala marks a fresh chapter in the brand’s compact class. He noted that the new Scala is a completely new development that would set new standards in terms of technology, safety and design in the compact class.
The new Skoda Scala will basically replace the already aging Skoda Rapid Spaceback. Much larger than its predecessor, the Scala is in position to directly compete against the Volkswagen Golf in Europe. It boasts of a new design language – both on the exterior and in the interior – as previewed by the Skoda Vision RS at the recently finished Paris Motor Show.
Skoda’s all-new compact model will be underpinned by the Volkswagen Group’s MQB A0 platform and is expected to be powered by the three- and four-cylinder turbo gasoline and diesel engines that the carmaker has been employing for its models. Its engine would send power to the wheels through either a six-speed manual transmission or a dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
There are already some speculations that Skoda is planning to follow up the new Scala compact model with a hot version that borrows a number of design clues from the Skoda Vision RS concept.
As unveiled at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, the new Vision RS represents a new form of RS DNA. Its features a front end marked by a sculptural bonnet with a Skoda logo made from illuminated crystal glass, as well as a radiator grille with illuminated high-gloss black carbon-fiber slats. On the flanks, the new Vision RS dons bold wings, recessed door handles, dynamic shoulder line as well as frameless, tinted side windows. The rear end features roof spoiler with an integrated third brake light while the upper tail lights look like an ‘L’ laid on its side.
