Nearly 90% of 2025 BMW i4s Still Unsold in the US as EV Demand Slows Post-Incentive

US New EV Shoppers Could Find Year-End Deals as 2025 Models Sit on Dealer Lots

  • BMW i4 leads with 89.2% of 2025 inventory still unsold, according to iSeeCars.

  • Expired federal EV incentive contributed to sales slowdown and dealer stock buildup.

  • Year-end dealer targets and 2026 arrivals increase potential for buyer negotiations.

Some of the highest unsold inventories of new vehicles in late 2025 are found among electric models, with a new study showing that several 2025 EVs remain in dealer stock at rates far above average.

According to the survey, nearly 90% of BMW i4 units from the 2025 model year are still available, highlighting a steep surplus compared to typical year-end trends. The average price of the top 12 leftover 2025 EVs for sale in the US is over $63,600. This could serve in large part to explain the situation.

The high inventory levels follow the expiration of the US federal EV purchase incentive, which ended on September 30, 2025. The discontinuation of the program led to a surge in purchases before the deadline, followed by a drop in demand.

“The challenge of selling electric vehicles only increased when the federal incentive ended on September 30,” noted iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer. The resulting sales spike ahead of the deadline reduced demand in the months that followed, leaving dealerships with excess inventory.

The study examined 2.6 million vehicle listings across North America to determine which 2024 and 2025 models remained unsold at the highest rates. Among 2025 electric vehicles, the BMW i4 led the list with 89.2% of units still on dealer lots, followed by the Porsche Macan at 67.8% and the Volkswagen ID.4 at 59.1%. Of the top 12, nine are premium models, including two Cadillacs and two Genesis SUVs.

By contrast, only 1.3% of 2024 model year EVs remain in dealer inventory, while the average for 2025 models is 18.7%. With 2026 vehicles already reaching showrooms, the backlog of unsold 2025 stock is expected to place downward pressure on prices.

Dealers are also facing timing pressures. With the end of the calendar year approaching, many are focused on clearing out older models before they are considered outdated. Analysts suggest that the combination of excess inventory and sales-driven incentives may allow buyers to negotiate lower prices.
