Did the Mercedes AMG GT 4-door coupe just break records at the Nurburging?

Even when companies say that they don’t care about setting records, they sometimes don’t mean it. For instance, Mercedes-Benz executives just said that they’re not really after record-breaking Nurburgring lap times.

But in contrary to this, they have talked about plans of pushing the Project One hypercar to its limits by taking it to the Green Hell. By doing so, aren’t they trying to prove themselves wrong, by hoping that this could be their fastest car ever? That’s not all, because the automaker also brought in the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe alongside it, which recently finished a near-record time lap.

Mercedes CEO, Tobias Moers, said in his interview with Automobile that the AMG GT Four-Door finished lapping the Ring in “7 minutes 30 something” seconds. Not only does this make it really quick, but that “something” could likely break a record. Even if it doesn’t, it will still be placed at one of the top spots of the leaderboard for four door vehicles, just behind Jag’s newest special edition.

Right now, it is the XE SV Project 8 that currently holds the course record for sedans with a lap time of 7 minutes 21 seconds, and in second place is the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio with a time of 7 minutes 32 seconds. And again, this is where the “something” in “30 something” has to be scrutinized.

If it is less than 30 seconds, then that means that the AMG GT Four Door will take the spot of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and earn the title of being the second fastest four door around the Green Hell.

We shouldn’t be surprised with that figure though, considering that the AMG GT Four-Door is the most powerful of the top three mentioned around the Nurburgring. On a normal day, the Mercedes AMG GT Four Door has an output of 630 horsepower (470 kilowatts) thanks to a 4.0 liter biturbo V8. Meanwhile, the Jaguar’s output is at 592 horsepower (441 kilowatts) and the Giulia has even less power than that at only 505 horsepower (376 kilowatts).

Well, the only way we will find out about the precise figures is when Mercedes Benz gives it to us, or better yet, if they invite media when the AMG GT Four Door gets another run around the Ring. However, the said model already looks like it has stolen the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio’s place on the scoreboard only a few months after its debut. Unfortunately for buyers, the four door coupe will not go on sale this year. You will have to wait until early 2019 for its arrival in dealerships.
