Mercedes-Benz promises to launch AMG versions of 2019 G-Class very soon
We all saw the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class as it made its very first appearance weeks ago at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Though we only witnessed it very recently, the automaker confirms that we will soon be seeing more unique AMG versions of it.
Ian James, G-Wagen’s Marketing Manager said during his interview with Automotive News that the G-Class AMG is not that far away from being revealed. He also continued by saying that this will be available for the upcoming 2019 model year, which only means that we should expect to see it this year.
Because of his statement, do not be surprised if an artist from X Tomi has already begun rendering this. This G63 rendering is likely what we will see in early March before any other variant. Moreover, the automaker has also already given up a preview of what must be the more powerful AMG model, by showing off this G-Class in the AMG Line specification, finished in white. Yes, the AMG is really just a visual package for the off-roader, but it comes with a handful of upgrades. One of the main upgrades is a larger and more powerful biturbo 4.0 liter V8 engine.
For now, we have no clue as to what the other variants of the G-Class will be. But do not be surprised if it is not the G65 particularly because Mercedes mentioned that the V12 engine will not work on any other vehicle but the Maybach. However, it still is too early to judge whether this strategy is going to be implemented in the G Class’ future.
The next thing you will probably ask is what other variant should we expect, if not the G65? Well, it wasn’t so long ago when Mercedes’ performance division launched a family of “53” models. The family of three consists of an E-Class Coupe, a Convertible, and the CLS. All these are equipped with a 3.0 liter inline six turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor. Overall, both can produce an output of 429 horsepower and 384 pound feet (520 Newton metres) of torque. Having said that, we will have to wait and see whether the Mercedes-AMG has more plans along the lines of a G53.
In other news, Dietmar Exler, Mercedes USA’s CEO mentioned that they have plans on testing the G-Class by giving it a special edition treatment. He says that they will “test the waters” for the special edition models. Now, this makes us think that there may be a 4x4 version or something similar to that. I think we all are excited for the G-Class and its variants.
