BMW M2 Competition name has been confirmed online

It has been a while since we first started hearing rumours about a more powerful BMW M2. And just like the M4 CS and the M3 CS, it was a long time in the making. In fact, I’m sure you remember seeing the spy shots of the so called M2 CS (Competition Series) going around the Nürburgring. But recently, new photos have emerged, revealing the identity of the sporty coupe ahead of its scheduled reveal.

It was a BimmerPost.com user that apparently shared these photos, and he claims that the more powerful M2 will be referred to as the “Competition” edition. The unnamed user who posted the images then said that these are in the log from the current M2. One of the photos then show a start/stop button like that of the F90 M5 and the F80 M3 CS. This was then shared by Bimmerpost on Facebook, which naturally caught the attention of many.

The BMW M2 Competition, if that’s really what it will be called, is supposed to be more powerful and better equipped than the standard M2 from the factory. To make it more exclusive, just 1,000 examples of the more hardcore M2 will be built, according to rumours. Each example will be getting a revised version of the 3.0 liter turbocharged inline-six engine, similar to the ones you will find in the current M3 and M4. This makes the M2 Competition somewhat like a baby M4.

Based on what we have seen before, there is also a chance for the M2 Competition to lose some of its weight. And since only a limited number will be produced, we should expect a considerable premium over the standard M2.

With that engine built into the M2 Competition, the vehicle will be able to carry out 405 horsepower (302 kilowatts), which is quite a huge jump compared to the current M2, which only carries out 365 horsepower (272 kilowatts).

This engine will be paired with either a seven speed dual clutch gearbox or a six speed manual transmission, that delivers power to the rear wheels. Power is not the only thing that the M2 Competition will boast, but with the upgraded suspension and handling upgrades, it will perform better on the track as well. Aside from that, ride quality on bumpy roads should improve too.

BMW has not said anything about when they will begin taking reservations for the upcoming M2. However, we do know that they will begin deliveries for this at around June this year. As for the pricing, we also have not received any information from the automaker, but expect it to cost a little more than the standard M2, which has a price tag of $53,500 MSRP in the United States.
