Chevy Corvette ZR1 and Porsche 911 GT3 RS take on the Nurburgring

Before, we talked about how many of today’s automakers want to set Nurburgring lap records. Now, we are going to talk about the two newest contenders that tried to take the crown home for the fastest lap around the Green Hell. The Chevy Corvette ZR1 and the Porsche 911 GT3 RS both recorded pretty fast laps, but only one managed to make a significant run at the record.
It was BridgeToGantry who shared information about this, saying that the GT3 RS, packed with 520 horsepower (383 kilowatts) lapped the ‘Ring in under 7 minutes, where its fastest lap was 6 minutes and 56 seconds. However, this won’t break records. Meanwhile, the more potent GT2 RS did it in 6 minutes and 47.30 seconds, and this we can say is an impressive record. In fact, this performance is enough to make it to the record board as among the top five production cars of all time.
The Corvette ZR1, on the other hand, was not as successful, finishing with over 7 minutes, despite its 755 horsepower (563 kilowatts) output. To be more specific, bystanders clocked it in at 7 minutes 12 seconds. That makes the ZR1 just a little better than the Z06’s 7 minutes and 19 seconds two years ago. For the sake of comparison, the fastest American production car to lap the Ring was the Viper ACR, lapping it at 7 minutes and 1.3 seconds.
After all the attempts, we have to make it clear that none of these lap times are official. And like I said, neither the Chevy nor the Porsche were able to beat the current record holders. At the time of writing, the current lap record holder for production cars would be the NIO EP9, with a time of 6 minutes, 45.90 seconds. But as you know, this was built in very limited numbers only. This is followed by the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, which is the second fastest car around the Ring, finishing at 6 minutes, 47.30 seconds. Third on the list would be the Lamborghini Huracan Performante at 6 minutes, and 52.01 seconds.
Overall, we know that Corvette fans are not exactly happy to hear the ZR1’s disappointing results around the Green Hell, with over 7 minutes. This stings particularly because every other model lapped the Ring with results under 7 minutes. In fact, the ZR1 barely improved from the C6 shaped forebear in 2012, which finished at 7 minutes and 19 seconds.
Today, it is VW Group’s Porsche and Lamborghini that are certainly winning at the Nurburgring track. For those of you who did not witness the actual race, you could check out videos of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS on BridgeToGantry’s page to see what really happened.
