Memminger’s latest take on the classic VW Beetle is a modern masterpiece

We’re seeing the last days of the Volkswagen Beetle. Sales of its third-generation model have not exactly been positive. But even as the Beetle’s end is impending, it won’t go out without a bang. Memminger, a small German manufacturer, has decided to give the world its version of the iconic car, and the product is absolutely beautiful.

In case you’re not familiar with Memminger, let us give you a few details. It was established in the late 1970s as a steel construction company. The very first time it restored a Beetle was just before the millennium but it eventually turned into their core business. Since then, Memminger has been building, as well as restoring Beetles with the use of the original recipe.

Today, the latest model the manufacturer has built is the Roadster 2.7, a true modern-day Beetle.

Under its hood is a 2.7 liter air cooler boxer engine that can deliver a total output of 210 horsepower. This is then mated to a five speed gearbox. As for the body, it is made of a welded tubular steel frame.

Its exterior is reminiscent of a classic Beetle but it comes with a hint of classic Porsche Speedster. The interior, on the other hand, reminds us of a more up to date affair, but it is pretty bare. When I say bare, I mean that there are no proper door handles or door cards, exposing the steel framework of the car. In fact, the interior gives off a race car vibe from the earlier days. The sports bucket seats are dressed in tartan lined fabric, giving the inside a little bit of colour.

After seeing the Memminger Roadster 2.7, it’s easy to conclude that many of us will want one. But the question is where can we actually get our hands on one and how much would each example cost? Well, the manufacturer did not give any details about this, but we think that you will at least need an old Beetle roadster as a base for this car, and of course, some major cash. As you know, boutique restomods are never cheap.

To further support the fact that Volkswagen is not giving the Beetle another generation to live, R&D boss of VW, Frank Welsch, confirmed last month that the Bug will soon be extinct. He stated that “two or three generations is enough now” and that they aren’t planning to reveal a “new Beetle”. So for those Beetle fans out there, we are so sorry to deliver this news to you
