Let’s address rumors about the next-gen Ford Focus RS

Production of the Ford Focus RS is scheduled to end exactly on April 6, but there might not be a long wait for the next one to get on the production line. According to our sources from Autocar, Ford’s hottest hatchback might actually arrive as early as 2020. This also brings back rumours that the new RS could get a hybrid powertrain.
If reports are accurate, the 2020 Ford Focus RS will keep the 2.3 liter turbocharged four cylinder. It might also get additional tuning which might slightly boost its output. Another improvement will come from a mild hybrid setup consisting of a 48-volt electrical system and integrated started generator. Overall, the system will be able to offer as much as 400 horsepower (298 kilowatts) and 425 pound feet (576 Newton metres) of torque. It will only be available with a dual-clutch automatic gearbox though.
Autocar suggests that the hybrid system could bring other driving advantages to the Ford Focus. To be more specific, engineers might tweak the tech to contribute a boost of power when gears are changing, so that there would never be a lull in torque delivery. The integrated starter generator could also add a little bit of power from a launch.
As for the Ford Focus’ overall weight, it should weigh about 110 pounds (50 kilograms) less than the current one. However, the hybrid equipment will likely add a little weight back onto the RS, so it might not be much lighter than the existing model.
If these rumours are true, then the Ford RS will have specifications like those of the Mercedes Benz’ next generation A45. The German brand’s hot hatch will be equipped with a 2.0 liter turbo four-cylinder that produces over 400 horsepower. An overhauled all wheel drive system will then reportedly take cues from the E63 S’ tech that will allow for a rear wheel drive mode.
Next week, we will see the standard version of the fourth generation Focus as it makes its debut on April 10. Sales of the said model will begin in Europe before the year ends. For the United States market, this will not be available until sometime in 2019. Production of all Ford Focus models will be done in China in case you were wondering.
Once this model comes to life, it will probably be another favourite car within the market. We have witnessed the success of the previous generations of the Ford Focus, and we can definitely see why the 2020 model year will be a hit too. When it comes to competition, it will likely rival the future Audi AMG and Audi Sport mega hatches.
