Mercedes-Benz trademarks G73 and S73 AMG models

Mercedes-Benz recently filed trademarks for a number of model names, suggesting that the automaker has plans to revise model names to denote their latest powertrains. But then, these registrations can’t be taken as an assurance that the automakers will actually use them. However, in this case, we have heard rumours about the automaker’s future that support the reports.

It was last September 24 that the automaker’s parent company, Daimler, filed for all these trademarks in Germany. And it was a month and a half later, December 8 when the patent and trademark office made these official and public. Automotive blog, Auto Guide, then learned about this when the automaker submitted paperwork for most of these names on January 22, 2018, in Canada.

As mentioned earlier, we think that the 73 moniker will be used by Mercedes-AMG for a version of the 4.0 liter biturbo V8 with the addition of the plug in hybrid parts. The 73 is said to be capable of giving out 800 horsepower (597 kilowatts) and 738 pound-feet (1,000 Newton-metres) of torque.

The 63 moniker, on the other hand, could refer to the less powerful but upgraded 4.0 liter biturbo that can carry out just enough power to still be impressive - with a total of 612 horsepower (456 kilowatts).

What we are unsure of when looking at the list of model names are the 53 models.

That is because to ur knowledge, the GLB, GLA and CLA-Class are all front wheel drive models. In contrast to that, current models such as the CLS53, E53 coupe, and E53 convertible all get a 3.0 liter turbocharged straight six engine together with a 48 volt electrical system and a small electric motor for hybrid boost. And because this uses a transverse powertrain layout, it is unlikely for it to be a four wheel drive model.

Not unless Mercedes is currently developing a new hybrid drivetrain for the 53 models. We also think that Mercedes could be planning to lose three-digit nameplates like the CLA250, and instead call it a CLA40 to make things less confusing.

Moreover, it isn’t just the 53 models that we are curious about, but also the 40 and 50 models. The new A-Class lineup includes models under the names A 200, A 250, and A 180d. Clearly, the automaker has veered from two-digit names on the hatchback, considering that have received new engines.

As mentioned earlier, Mercedes registered these names in Germany, Canada, and probably a couple more markets. These not only include names for the standard series production models, but also AMGs.
