2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan will come to the US, but don’t expect the hatchback variant

Mercedes-Benz recently announced their newest A-Class model, and we think that the upgraded hatchback looks amazing beside the rest of its siblings, plus the fact that it now highlights the new MBUX infotainment technology that just makes it extra modern - in fact, way more than the rest of the models. With all that good news, there is one thing that might disappoint you, and it is the fact that there will not be a hatchback version of the A-Class in the United States - sorry to burst your bubble.

This is because Mercedes plans to only sell the five door A-Class in markets outside of the United States, while the American market only gets the four-door model. In fact, Canadians will even be able to get their hands on the hatchback configuration. This was confirmed by Mercedes Benz Canada CEO, Brian D. Fulton, during his interview with The Truth About Cars.

Fulton supported his statement by saying that their US colleagues already confirmed the idea that only the sedan version of the A-Class will be sold in North America. Meanwhile, Canada will get both versions: the sedan and the hatchback. More details on the sedan will be released later this year.

Regardless of which variant you go for, the A Class will be getting a 1.4 liter turbocharged gas engine as standard. Customers could either pair this with a seven speed dual clutch gearbox or a six speed manual. This will then deliver 161 horsepower (120 kilowatts) and 184 pound-feet (249 Newton-metres) of torque. If that is not enough power for you, you could opt for the more powerful 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder that’s available as an option. This larger engine can deliver 221 horsepower (165 kilowatts) and 258 pound feet (350 Newton metres) of torque.

Aside from the engine options mentioned earlier, there are also diesel options available, such as the 1.5 liter four cylinder turbodiesel engine that carried out 114 horsepower (85 kilowatts) and 192 pound-feet (260 Newton metres) of torque. The diesel engine is paired with a seven speed dual clutch transmission. Customers will get the A-Class as a front wheel drive, though they could change this to the optional 4Matic all-wheel drive system.

The North American market will be able to get their hands on the 2019 four door Mercedes Benz A-Class later this year. So far, the automaker has not shared pricing details for this model just yet, though we expect it to be cheaper than the current CLA that has a base price tag of $32,700.
