Ford says GT supercar won’t attempt to break any lap records
Unlike about a handful of automakers out there, Ford claims that they do not care about breaking lap records. Recently, the GT supercar shattered the fastest lap time at Virginia International Raceway. In fact, they were able to achieve this in “less than ideal circuit conditions”, and with only a small support crew, and a driver (Billy Johnson) who has never lapped that circuit before.
The Ford GT came home with a record time of 2:38.62 after their recent visit to the Virginia International Raceway, but the automaker claims that they do not intend on building on that record - sorry GT fans.
Ford also recently told the Drive that they will not be going to the Nurburgring (or any other track) anytime soon to compete with vehicles like the Viper ACR and Corvette Z06. Right now, the GT may be the fastest car out there, but Ford would rather focus on building new vehicles than spending their time trying to prove to be better than the rest.
A Ford representative said that they have no plans to go to VIR or any circuits to beat any lap records. Moreover, he wrote in the email that chief engineer of Ford Performance, Jamal Hameedi, said that the focus is on new cars.
Aside from Ford, Hyundai has also given up on developing cars for the sake of beating lap times. Alternatively, other automakers like Chevrolet are doubling down on this, as they recently said that their goal is to see the Camaro do a sub seven minute lap around the Nurburgring. Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer actually believes that the ZL1 could even do better around the track with some added horsepower and aero work. It’s funny how rivals Ford and Chevrolet have such different mindsets.
Oppenheiser then said that any driver that comes out of the car after driving it will always say that there is more in it. He continued on to say that he would like to see a Camaro go under 7:00 at the Nurburgring.
If you are looking for one potent supercar, look no further than the Ford GT. It comes equipped with a 3.5 liter biturbo EcoBoost V6 that enables it to produce 647 horsepower (482 kilowatts) and 550 pound feet (745 Newton metres) or torque. We wouldn’t doubt that it would be the fastest car around the Nurburgring, but don’t say that to the people from Ford.
Because Ford is so dedicated on focusing on building their future vehicles instead of looking into beating lap times, this makes us doubly curious about what they are planning to add to their lineup
