This gold-plated DeLorean DMC-12 is currently up for grabs
Are you into really rare and expensive cars? Well, if you are, then this will definitely catch you attention as there are just five examples of this model in the world. It is the DeLorean DMC-12sports car. Back in the 1980s, specifically between 1981 and 1983, this model was not as rare as it is now, because the company built a total of 8,583 examples back then. Each model came with a set of gullwing doors, a fiberglass body structure, and brushed stainless steel body panels. I’m not done yet though. What makes this particular example more special is that it is part of the small sampling of vehicles that were give 24 karat gold plating. In fact, it’s currently up for grabs.
This definitely will be one of the rarest cars you would spot on the streets today, with only five examples in the world since the 80s. Therefore, it is not the cheapest DeLorean out there too, considering that the owner is selling it for $150,000. Specifically, this is one of two cars that had been gold plated by customers, but the company still considers it to be part of the original five.
Decades later, we are pleased to know that this DeLorean is still in pretty good shape. Most of the car’s body is covered in the aforementioned gold finish, except for the front and the rear bumpers. Overall, it had only been driven with just 156 miles (251 kilometers) on its odometer, which is quite impressive for a very old car. Under the hood, it remains with the same V6 engine and five-speed manual transmission that it originally came with. It also has a VIN ending in 16625.
We do not actually know the story as to why this car was finished in 24-karat gold, but does it really matter? What we do know is that one of this car’s earliest appearances was back in a 1990 issue of DuPont Registry. In fact, it was once advertised as a “no mileage”, “never registered” example by Cooper Classics in New York. Cooper Classics is a classic car dealership based in the US. For the second time, this model made another appearance at a court-ordered auction in Flint, Michigan, in June this year. That time, it displayed the same 156 miles (251 kilometers) and a matching VIN.

This model has been in the same collection for almost three decades and was sold in 1990 for $100,000.
