Morgan Motor confirms start of production of Electric 3 Wheeler in 2018
Morgan Motor Company said that the Electric 3 Wheeler will begin production in 2018. Once it goes on sale, it will showcase traditional craftsmanship combined with the latest in EV technology.
Powering this model is an electric motor, as well as batteries, both of which are manufactured by Frazer-Nash Energy Systems. In fact, it is this partnership with Frazer-Nash that allowed Morgan to finally begin production of the EV3.
When the EV3 is officially released, it will become the first ever electric vehicle from Morgan. It will also be the first model from Morgan to have body construction that features composite panels. Indeed, this latest three-wheeler offering from Morgan offers a number of firsts for the brand.
It was back in 2016 when the brand first unveiled the EV3. The agreement with Frazer-Nash is what served as the final piece of the puzzle in order for the EV3 to go into production. This new model reveals a space frame chassis that is completely tubular. Coupled to this feature are the 34.8-kW liquid-cooled motor and the 21-kWh lithium battery. Morgan projects that this combination will allow the EV3 to have a range as far as 120 miles (193 kg). The engine of the EV3 is capable of delivering 101 bhp. It can go from 0 to 62 mph in under 9 seconds with maximum speed not exceeding 90 mph.
The brand also believes that performance figures will be similar to the gas-powered version. One additional benefit is that owners will no longer face the risk of burning their legs on the exhaust manifold each time they get out or in.
Managing Director Steve Morris shared that the brand is happy to talk about this technical partnership it has with Frazer-Nash as it kicks off the EV3 production. He added that the brand had been working closely in order to optimize the architecture of EV3. He continued that the brand wanted to develop a car with a cooling performance and reliability range that are both proven. This is then combined with the pure driving experience that customers have long expected from a hand-crafted Morgan, Morris concluded.
Based in Malvern Link, Morgan Motor was founded by Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan back in 1910. The brand employs a total 177 people and manufactures at least 1,300 cars every year, all of which are assembled by hand. Morgan cars have a rather long waiting list, with the shortest being six months and the longest one at 10 years. Models from Morgan are unique as these have wood as part of their construction for 100 years now. Those who want to view the history of the brand may see its exhibits at its museum and visitor center. These are not limited to its automobiles as they also showcase the developments in auto technology.
