BMW will introduce at least 26 new or updated M cars by late 2020 under overhaul program

Just a couple of days ago, BMW published an image of their long term plan for the next couple of years, and this includes electrifying most of their cars. We also know that the sports division will not build a front wheel drive car, but instead will switch to conventional torque converter automatics in the next six to seven years. A new report from Autocar gives us more details on the company’s roadmap as they prepare for a pretty ambitious revision program in history.

Long story short, BMW aims to launch at least 26 all-new and revised models by the end of 2020. This will consist of 11 true M cars plus 15 “warm” M performance versions of current models. The Bavarian automaker aims to deliver 100,000 units around the globe annually.

Models like the next generation M3, together with the M4 Coupe and Cabriolet, will have a central role in the overhaul program. Sources say that the M3 will make an appearance at Frankfurt Motor Show in 2019, with sales starting a couple of months later. However, it is a bit too early to rely on rumours like that, plus nothing has been confirmed yet.

Frank van Meel, BMW M director told Autocar in an interview that the M3 is just as important for the automaker as the M5. Though it was not the fully fledged M car, it still continues to stand for everything the brand represents.

Of course, M versions of the third generation X3 and the second generation X4 will be a very important part of the company’s growth, along with the upcoming 8 series. In fact, the company has already confirmed an M8 that will make its debut sometime next year.

Enough with the performance models, and let’s move on to the mid-range M Performance vehicles. There will be more powerful versions of the X2, new 3 Series, and the future X7 SUV. Even if the 4 Series GT has not been confirmed yet, the automaker is already planning to give them variants. Aside from that, the next generation 4 Series Coupe and Cabriolet, and the third 1 Series will likely be getting their own variants as well.

It seems like the next couple of years will be very busy for BMW, but it is good that they are coming up with so many things for us, as long as they do not lose their focus on everything that they are doing. And as mentioned earlier, the automaker also plans to focus on e-mobility, and to electrify most of their vehicles, while developing new ones up until 2025. In fact, we have already seen one of their first hybrid models, the i8 Roadster at the recent Los Angeles Auto Show.
