Audi vehicles will soon be more distinguishable from each other
Audi has got a new plan for their future vehicles, and that is to make them look distinct from one another, veering away from its cookie-cutter design philosophy. We think that this an awesome way to kick off the year, plus customers will not have to deal with just one design when choosing an Audi.
It’s difficult not to notice that the German automaker has released a number of vehicles in the past few years that all have similar looks. In fact, some of them look very identical to one another. If you’re not an expert and if you don’t look closely, you’d easily mistake one model for another. And because of that, Audi said that it is will begin making vehicles that look quite different from the rest of the cars in the lineup, giving them their own distinct character.
However, to defend the reason why they had a unifying design for many years, Rupert Stadler said that it was so that Audis would be more recognizable in newer and emerging markets like China. And because they are already recognized in China, they can already change their philosophy and start something new.
Marc Lichte, Audi design boss, agreed with Rupert Stadler and said that the distinct designs should make each of the brand’s vehicles more attractive. He mentioned that today, the brand is ready for more differentiation compared to few years back. He also mentioned that the automaker’s cars are often in production for a minimum of six years.
Apart from the design, future Audi cars will soon adopt electric powertrains. This will provide car designers with greater independence by letting them design vehicles with “shorter overhangs and lower bonnets”, says Lichte. He also said that design will go in a very different way, especially with electric vehicles, citing more creative freedom, thanks to more compact drivetrain dimensions.
For those who are huge fans of Audi’s signature design, this may not be good news to you, but for those who want something new and cool, then this is the beginning of something more visually appealing from Audi, as they will no longer be photocopying their current vehicles. We do wonder how extensive they will go with their new designs.
One of the next Audi models that we will be seeing soon is the upcoming Q2 that will be competing against the Mini Countryman, while still wearing Audi’s established design tropes, but this time, we are hoping for it not to be mistaken for a Q3 or Q5.
