MG returns with the E-Motion Concept

MG surprises us at the 2017 Auto Shanghai with its brand new concept: the E-Motion. This electric grand tourer is comparable to the likes of the hybrid models from Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, and Aston Martin. The automaker goes back to its sports car roots with this concept. It is shaped like a coupe but has an electric powertrain that packs some really impressive numbers.

The E-Motion has an eye-catching design. It has a grille similar to that of a Mercedes’ “diamond” grille, with a pair of sleek headlights that reminds us of those on current Mazda models - which are supposed to be inspired by the London Eye. As you look at the sides, you might get glimpses of a classic Aston Martin. Meanwhile, vertical taillights extend to the fenders, and a prominent spoiler lip are found on the rear end. Moreover, this concept features butterfly doors, and massive panoramic glass roof from the front all the way to the rear end, following its sloped roofline. It also comes with a huge diffuser and flush door handles. Overall, the car has a sporty appearance.

Inside, the cabin can accommodate four passengers. A fully digital instrument cluster is installed for the driver, with touch sensitive controls. Rotary knobs are built into the air vents for temperature control, like the Audi TT. Even the back passengers get their own touch-operated console.

As for the engine, the company has not said specifically said how much power this one can produce, but we do know that in less than four seconds, it can reach 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) from a stop. And we do know that the battery pack can last for over 310 miles (500 kilometers) between charges, though there was no mention of the actual type they used for this model. The E-Motion’s electric setup has solely been developed in-house by the SAIC-owned marque.

Matthew Cheyne of MG UK’s sales and marketing says in an interview that this concept, which is currently on display at the Auto Shanghai, might go into production by the end of the decade and should be priced just below £30,000 ($38,500). However, this will all depend on the feedback the company receives after the concept’s premiere, and if it gets a stamp of approval to be developed into a road-going model. Though Cheyne did say that there is a chance with how it looks as of the moment.

As of now, the company only has two cars in their lineup. The MG3 which is hatchback, and the GS crossover - both of which are sold cheaply. So we are not sure if a technologically advanced low-volume sports car will fit in the lineup.
