2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS rendered as a Coupe, Cabriolet and in AMG guise

During the recent 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show, one of the few cars that stood out would be this 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS that made its debut. Because it turned heads, it has inevitably become a favourite among rendering artists.

Some of them may just be for the hell of it, like the Coupe and the Cabriolet. The newest one looks actually quite promising. Imagined by artist Aksyonov Nikita, is a four-door coupe in the range topping AMG guise.

Up front, some of the noticeable changes would be the new bumper and the modified grille that includes the AMG badging. The rear end, on the other hand, gets a new bumper, carbon fiber diffuser and a boot lid spoiler, as well as quad tailpipes.

Since this is just a rendering, it will have to remain in the virtual world, and we will have to wait a few months to see whether the upcoming Mercedes AMG CLS63 will look anything like this. It may even have a Panamericana grille. It may also have a lower suspension and a more aggressive body kit. As for the engine, we know that Mercedes is giving it a 4.0 liter twin turbo V8 in a regular and an S version.

The more aggressive S trim CLS63 will likely share the same engine as the E63S. Yes, the one that is capable of producing 604 horsepower (612 PS) and 627 pound-feet (850 Newton metres) of torque. As for performance, it can do the standard 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) sprint in just 3.3 seconds, before it continues on to its top speed of 250 kilometers per hour (155 miles per hour) with the electronic limiter. And without it, that would be 300 kilometers per hour (186 miles per hour). Having said all that, we expect the regular CLS63 to have similar performance.

Now, let us veer from the virtual world and discuss the real deal instead. At the recent LA Auto Show, we learned quite a few things about the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS when it made its first live appearance. The five-seater physically looks more corporate than it ever was.

But that’s not what’s selling this car, because under the hood, is the automaker’s newest inline six (instead of the usual V8). The twin-turbo 3.0 liter will make anything from 360 to 500 horsepower with 48-volt hybrid assist. Buyers have an option to get it as a rear-wheel drive or 4Matic all-wheel drive, and every CLS450 will be equipped with a nine speed automatic transmission.

Among its standard features is a two-tiered dashboard, where the lower half sits four central air vents, while the top bit highlights a 12.3 inch central display shared with the E-class.
