Tuners Rejoice: Performance Parts Are Coming To The 2.0 Turbo Camaro

Demand from younger owners for ways to heat-up their 2.0-litre turbocharged Camaros means Chevrolet is now developing some tasty options

Chevrolet Performance is working on lines of performance parts to bolt to the 2.0-litre Camaro, apparently in the wake of customer demand from younger owners.
In an interview with Hagerty, the chief engineer for the Camaro, Al Oppenheiser, said that the 2.0-litre four-pot was selling well, and that demand for performance parts is high.
The wide-ranging interview outlined Oppenheiser’s love for the pony car segment, which has three ‘relevant’ competitors pushing each other to do more. Speaking about the smallest Camaro engine, he said:
The 2.0-liter turbo has actually, in some months, passed the V-6 in sales. About 30 per cent of our volume is 2.0-litre turbos.
The 275bhp 2.0-litre Camaro is available across Europe, including in the UK. When asked about whether he was developing tuning options for the car, Oppenheiser responded with a confident “absolutely.”
We are working with them. Mark Dickens, who runs that group, worked for me when I was in the performance division and we ran the Bonneville program on all the Ecotec engines that had stage kits anywhere from 40 all the way to 1000 horsepower. I would love to relive those days. It was one of the reasons why I was so happy to get the 2.0-litre in the Camaro.
It’s the younger buyer that is providing the motivation, too, for this sixth-generation Camaro. He went on to say:I’d read the blogs, and a lot of younger people wouldn’t consider the fifth-generation Camaro because there was no 2.0-litre that they could modify with a stage kit.”
At the very least, we’re impressed that the company is bearing the younger buyer in mind. Long may that attitude continue!
