Chevrolet Volt production could end in 2022, most likely to be replaced by electric crossover

It is not the first time that we have heard rumours about the discontinuation of the Chevrolet Volt. In fact, it has been years since we first heard of it, and today, the rumours are back. And it seems like it will actually happen in 2022. According to GM Authority, sources from AutoForecast Solutions say that the automaker plans to focus more on developing electric crossover and utility vehicles, and this is why the automaker sees no future for the Volt.

Apart from the idea of discontinuing the Volt, General Motors is actually considering getting rid of six passenger cars from its United States lineup by 2020. Of course, since these models will be gone for good, the company has plans of replacing them with a plug-in crossover of some sort, or a fully electric vehicle. That isn’t such a bad thing to be honest.

So if rumours are true, and if Chevrolet goes as planned, it will not be a big surprise to many anymore. This is also because passenger cars have not been moving as well in the United States. Moreover, the American automaker’s long term plan is to launch a total of 20 new electric cars by 2023, so do not be too sentimental about the discontinuation of the Volt, because you will have a lot more to choose from as a replacement to it.

As of today, none of these have been confirmed by automaker yet, and they have not made a move to discontinue the Volt just yet. However, they did stop the production of the closely related Cadillac ELR in February 2016 because its sales were declining. In 2015, only a total of 1,024 were sold. As for the Volt, it is not doing as bad when it comes to sales figures. In fact, the automaker sold almost 25,000 units in 2016, while 18,000 were delivered in the first 11 months of the current year.

As mentioned earlier, General Motors plans to sell at least 20 electric vehicles by 2023, and in the next 12 to 18 months, expect to see two new pure EVs that they will first launch. The first two vehicles should be based on what the company has learned since releasing the Chevrolet Bolt EV. One more thing that we know is that the two new electric vehicles will likely be produced at the Detroit Hamtramck plant.

So, whether or not the Chevrolet Volt will be discontinued, it is up to the automaker. And for now, we really are just waiting for a confirmation from their end. And like I said earlier, it’s all good as we can expect better things to come.
