Next generation BMW M3 and M4 will offer more power from S58 engine
The newly introduced Mercedes AMG C63 S and the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio both deliver an immense output of 500 horsepower. But now that BMW is ready to introduce the next generation M3 and M4, they made it clear that despite the increase in power, both cars will not compete against the output of their rivals.
BMW Blog recently wrote that both the M3 and the M4 will continue to use the same 3.0 liter twin-turbo six-cylinder engine, but this time, it will be called the S58. As mentioned earlier, output will be improved from originally 425 horsepower in base specification, to around 470 to 475 horsepower. We can expect to see the S58 engine in the X3 M and the X4 M ahead of the up and coming M3 and M4.
Some of you may be confused because previous rumours stated that the next generation models would come with a 48-volt electrical system and a small electric motor paired with both the engine and transmission.
Apart from the engine upgrade, expect the next M3 and M4 to be built on a new platform too. We’re referring to the CLAR platform. The vehicle’s new base should give it less weight overall, making them weigh 88 pounds (40 kilos) less than their predecessors, which should be beneficial for both as it may also improve their performance.
The next generation 3 Series and 4 Series will still come in a number of guises. For instance, the automaker plans to add a 340i M Performance to the range. The said model should go against the Mercedes AMG C43. There may also be a 340d M Performance with all-wheel drive and a diesel engine that can carry out around 320 PS (315 horsepower / 235 kilowatts)
A variety of different engines could range from a three-, four-, and six-cylinder options, and the gasoline units are expected to receive a minor performance boost, and of course, reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. Plug in variants may also be available soon with an electric range of up to 50 kilometers (31 miles).
What we know about the 3 Series so far are all based on previous reports. We’ve heard that the upcoming sedan will be a little longer than its predecessor - by about 6 centimeters (2.3 inches), with about 2 centimeters (0.7 inches) of that coming from the longer wheelbase. This is based on the photos of the prototype that had been spotted.
The next generation models will also likely get a makeover in the cabin, getting rid of some buttons to make it look minimalistic, while getting equipped with the latest iDrive infotainment system.
