Chevrolet gets ready to unleash the Camaro GT4.R race car for this year’s competition

It just keeps getting hotter. McLaren, Porsche and Ford Motors have heated up the GT4 racing runways. In no time, BMW and Mercedes-AMG will be joining in. Not to be left out of the game, Chevrolet has raised the temperature even higher with a new GT4 race car.

Pratt & Miller has reformulated the 6th generation Chevrolet Camaro to take on any dare --- whether it be with a Cayman or a Mustang on the loose. Simply put, the track-ready Chevy GT4.R is now suitable for a spin at the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge and Pirelli World Challenge. These are just the top two GT racing championships in North America by the way. Apparently, there are many other GT4 racing series around the world just like the GT4 European Series, the British GT Championship, the Hankook 24Hour Series and the Nurburgring Endurance Series.

Going back to the subject, the new Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R is using the same engine platform as that of the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 28.R. Yes, it’s the same type of engine on a Chevy that won at the Continental Tire SportsCar event in 2015.

Pratt & Miller has modified the Camaro’s 6.2 liter V8 engine into a dry sump, track ready version and mated it a with pneumatic-paddle-shift-operated 6-speed Xtrac sequential gearbox. Also, the Camaro has already been equipped with adjustable ABS, Brembo brakes with 6-piston calipers, Ohlins Racing coilover damper units and Xtrac limited slip differential with tunable traction control. To enhance its aerodynamics performance, the race tuning specialist has developed a new set of dive planes, new front splitter and new rear wing for the GT4 racer.

Pratt & Miller is known in the racing industry for developing Chevrolet Corvettes. Based on the teaser video, the Chevy Camaro GT4.R will be competing this year but it did not say exactly where or when. Even so, we’re quite positive that it will be joining the GT4 series competitions worldwide. If ever, it would be the second time for a GT4-spec Camaro to compete for IMSA’s Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. Among its possible contenders would be the McLaren 570S GT4, the Ford Mustang GT4, as well as the Porsche Cayman GT4.

The CTSC or the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge is scheduled this coming March at the Sebring International Raceway. We can also expect Stevenson Motorsports at the debut since it has raced a Chevy Camaro Z28 and won several times at the championships in the previous years. As for the Pirelli World Challenge, it seems like the Camaro Z.28 former GTS Class racing team is also looking forward to getting its hands on the new GT4 model. Chevrolet today introduced the Camaro GT4.R – a new-for-2017 and fully race-ready variant of the sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro

Built to global GT4 regulations, the Camaro GT4.R is eligible in the IMSA’s Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge (GS category) and the Pirelli World Challenge (GTS class), two of North America’s top GT racing championships, as well as additional GT4 series across the world.

Developed with technical partner Pratt & Miller Engineering, the Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R is built off the Camaro ZL1 road car platform. The race-tuned, dry-sump 6.2L LT1 V8 small-block engine – developed and validated by Chevrolet Racing – delivers its power through a race proven, six-speed Xtrac sequential transmission with pneumatic paddle shift and adjustable traction control. Other notable features unique to the GT4.R include:

• Xtrac racing limited-slip differential
• Two-Way Adjustable Ohlins Racing Coil-Over Dampers
• Adjustable ABS featuring Brembo brakes with six-piston aluminum monobloc calipers in the front
• Aerodynamic improvements developed in the wind tunnel including a new rear wing, front splitter and front diveplanes.

The racing success of the fifth-generation Camaro gave Chevrolet engineers a head start on creating a turn-key racer in the GT4.R.

From 2010-16, the Camaro GS and Camaro Z/28.R won 55 races, two Manufacturer’s championships and five driving titles in major North American competition. The lessons and experience aided in the design and development of Chevrolet’s latest customer-driven track car.
