1987 Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 sold at auction for £20,000 higher than estimate price

Earlier in July, we talked about the limited run 1987 Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 that will be put up on auction. This is one of the few models out there that have an impressive car-to-wing ratio. The Cosworth powered Sierra was born in the 1980s when Ford wanted to try the Sierra hatchback in a different setup. Only 500 units of these were made – all of which shared the whale-tail design. Most of them had a black exterior while a few were in white, some in moonstone blue, and only one example was grey.

Under the hood is a 2.0 liter engine that features a Garrett turbocharger, enabling the car to produce 224 horsepower (167 kilowatts) and 204 pound-feet (277 Newton-metres) of torque. It may not be as powerful as the race car variant, but it still is pretty fast for its time. If you did not know, the track-only model can generate an impressive 500 horsepower, and when tuned, can be pushed to 570 horses even.

With the Cosworth-powered engine, the road-going model with a rear wheel drive setup can still beat a lot of cars in our generation. It can attain the 0-62 miles per hour (0-100 kilometers per hour) sprint in just 6.2 seconds, and can continue on to a top speed of 153 miles per hour (246 kilometers per hour).

Out of the 500 cars, this specific model is number 387 and has under 11,000 miles (17,702 kilometers) in its odometer, that is after 30 years of its life. This car was also given a full on service earlier this year that gave it new fluids, belts, battery and fuel tank. It was John Taylor of Cosworth that made this happen; he also had to give the car new brake discs on both the front and rear axles.

Only the ones mentioned earlier are the new parts the Ford Sierra got, other than that, everything else is original and is still intact - even the original 1987 Dunlop tires and wheels, and the windows and body panels. As for the interior, it still looks pretty new without any visible signs of its age, except for the design maybe.

Over the weekend, the car was brought to the Classic Sale 2017 and was put on auction by Silverstone Auctions. It was initially given an estimate price of £90,000 to £100,000 ($117,000 to $130,000) plus 15 percent buyer’s premium. The package includes original handbooks, the original parts that were swapped, and full service history. By the end of the auction, it was sold for £114,750 ($150,000), which is £20,000 more than the estimate.
