AMG CEO confirms arrival of electrified performance cars

With performance automobiles going hybrid or purely electric, there's no denying that most of the automakers are slowly reconsidering the hybrid and electric vehicle concept. This time, AMG is following suit with this electric trend, and it seems there's no going back.

Back in 2013, the limited edition SLS AMG Electric Drive was made available in the market and is considered an accurate example of what the future of the Mercedes-AMG will be with regards to electrified performance cars. Talks revealed that a Project One hybrid range topper is geared to be unveiled in production disguise around September this year at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Mercedes-AMG Project One Hypercar was unveiled behind closed doors last month at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. The hypercar is rumoured to be equipped with a turbocharged 1.6 L V6 engine based on the Mercedes-AMG's title-grabbing W07 Formula 1 car. This engine is geared to produce around 748 hP (558 kW) and will be paired with no less than 4 electric motors.

These 4 powerful electric motors will work hand in hand with the V6 gasoline unit to produce an outstanding 1,020 hP (761kW) of power. That’s a beast of a vehicle. Moreover, the big boss of AMG, Tobias Moers, said that they are just getting started.

Previously, if someone will mention hybrid powertrains, the Toyota Prius will immediately come to mind. Now there is the Porsche 918 Spyder, LaFerrari, Rimac Concept_One electric hypercar and the Tesla EVs.

AMG recently revealed its GT 4 door concept, which has the newest "EQ Power+" label that indicates that hybrid powertrains will possibly be seen in a production model not long after the launch of regular models in 2018 or 2019. It’s probable then that a hybrid AMG GT 4 door sedan will be welcomed by the public around the year 2020.

Moers was asked by Automotive News if the plug-in hybrid tech will perhaps be included in the AMG line-up, in which he responded that it will indeed happen, considering that the go-faster division is not able to change the future.

The head honcho of AMG further explained that they have to adapt to the contemporary regulations and requirements, and with these, they can move forward and find more ingenious solutions along the way. Despite keeping mum with regards to the rollout of the newest performance plug in hybrids, the AMG's head did disclose that these full electric vehicles are on the table and are expected to hit the streets soon.

Ola Kallenius, Mercedes R&D chief, also said something along these lines at the start of this year at the Detroit Auto Show. He said that both the pure EVs and hybrid will soon join the AMG family as performance variants of the up and coming EQ-badged models.
