Oettinger VW Golf 400R police car concept is presented under Germany safety campaign
Aren’t aftermarket tuners just the coolest guys? Not just because they can modify your car, but because they can make your already nice car, way cooler and personalised to your style. This time, we are referring to Oettinger, but before we move on to that, let us first discuss why this particular car has been introduced in Germany.
Police enforcers need to be fast enough to be able to chase down fast vehicles along various stretches. However, police officers cannot be provided with their own Porsche 911s or Mercedes AMG GTs, because that will cost too much.
This is where Oettinger enters the picture. During the Essen Motor Show a couple of weeks ago, the aftermarket tuner revealed a unique Volkswagen Golf R dressed in police livery with special equipment. And when we say special equipment, we mean flashing lights attached on the roof as well as in the air dam. The police kit is completed with a foil wrap in blue, white and neon yellow, and a huge word that spells “Polizei.”
Apart from the exterior upgrades, the Volkswagen Golf R also comes with a full aero kit that of course includes a new front splitter, side skirts, rear apron, and a roof spoiler. It was also given a custom hood, and new four-pipe exhaust system with 90mm tailpipes. A set of 20 inch alloy wheels covered in Hanhook rubber completes its overall look.
Earlier, we mentioned that the police needs to be able to drive a car fast enough to run after offenders. And of course, Oettinger did something for that too. Under the hood of the VW is a 2.0 liter turbo four cylinder engine. From its original output of 310 horsepower, it has now improved to an impressive 400 horsepower. In only 3.6 seconds, the Golf R can now reach a speed of 62 miles per hour from a standstill, before it continues to a top speed of 180 miles per hour – these are quite impressive numbers for a Golf.
Though this modified Volkswagen Golf R looks promising and looks like it can do the jo, do not expect to see this on the road anytime soon. And that is because this one-off example was made to be part of the Tune It! Safe! campaign, that is supported by the federal transport ministry, and by industry members too.
What do you think of Oettinger’s work? We’d love to someday see this vehicle chase down criminals on the road. But who knows? It just might soon be part of Germany’s police fleet.
